Cutchogue – A Rich History

Cutchogue, named after the Native American tribe, the Corchaugs, who first inhabited Fort Corchaug before the English settlers arrived in 1640, is located in the Town of Southold. 2015 marks the Town of Southold’s 375th anniversary with festivities taking place in Cutchogue and other hamlets around town.

A Person of Honor – Otto Schoenstein

Otto Schoenstein was chosen by the East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation as the Person of Honor for its 25th Annual Maritime Festival. The following story is from a meeting this writer had with Mr. and Mrs. Schoenstein.

WM. J. Mills and Co. Sailmakers

The battered sign hanging on the far wall of the Wm. J. Mills and Co. Sailmakers showroom shows its age. ‘Established 1880’ it says, the year an enterprising Scottish immigrant named William Mills hung this very shingle outside his freshly-minted workshop in Greenport, which in those years was a commercial fishing hub.

From Strong’s Peconic Bay marina in Mattituck, boaters can experience pristine beaches, peaceful cruising and ideal conditions for watersports, and take jaunts to Shelter Island, the Hamptons and beyond.  Current model Pursuit and Cobalt boats, from 18 to 24 ft., are available for rent by the day, week or season. 

The Hamlet Of Southold

The hamlet of Southold was settled in 1640 by English Puritans from New Haven Colony in Connecticut. It is reported to be the first English settlement on Long Island and the oldest English town in New York State. Celebrating its 350th birthday in 1990, it will celebrate its 375th birthday in 2015!

Shelter Island – A Uniquely Beautiful Place

Shelter Island, an 8,000-acre island situated between the North and South Forks, is surrounded by Shelter Island Sound on three sides and Gardiners Bay on the fourth side.
