Old Fashioneds To Try

The nights for frozen cocktails are behind us, and now we turn to drinks that are sure to warm the soul. A simple favorite is the old fashioned. This classic cocktail is traditionally made with bourbon or rye, Demerara (simple) syrup and bitters over ice. For something a little different, we recommend these three variations from North Fork bars.

Warm your bones with an orange old fashioned from Bistro 72 in Riverhead. Widow Jane Bourbon, orange marmalade, and orange bitters make for a nice fireside drink. Bay Breeze Inn and Chophouse in Jamesport offers a playful twist from their menu, Coughlin’s Laws, a nod to the popular Tom Cruise movie, Cocktail. Their old fashioned, “Bury the dead, they stink up the joint,” is made with Rough Ryder Whiskey, smoked sugar, amaro, and orange bitters. At Brix and Rye in Greenport, each old fashioned is made to complement its base alcohol. Choose bourbon, whiskey, rum, or brandy, just to start.
