Greenport Sets Sail

Each September, something shifts in Greenport. The harbor fills with tall ships, the air carries the mingled scent of salt and woodsmoke, and a village already beloved for its charm becomes something more — a living celebration of the maritime traditions that shaped this corner of the East End. The 36th annual Greenport Maritime Festival returns the weekend of September 26 and 27, 2026.

This year brings a fresh chapter for one of the East End’s most beloved traditions, as stewardship of the festival passes from the East End Seaport Museum to the Greenport Business Owners Alliance —a collective of local leaders with deep roots in the community and a genuine commitment to keeping this celebration thriving for generations to come. And what a celebration it is. From schooners anchoring in the harbor to oyster shuckers holding court on the docks, sea shanties carrying on the breeze, and the gloriously chaotic cardboard boat regatta — equal parts naval ambition and inspired slapstick — the festival is a full, joyful immersion in coastal culture.

Friday evening sets the tone with the Land & Sea Gala, a ticketed downtown event pairing local wines with the finest the region’s kitchens have to offer. Saturday brings the Classic Boat Regatta and Maritime Parade, a spirited procession of pirates, vintage tractors, fire trucks, and local floats that generates exactly the kind of unscripted energy no amount of planning can manufacture. Sunday slows things down beautifully, closing the weekend with an oyster shucking contest, a hot sauce competition, and the iconic cardboard boat races — proof that the best traditions never get old.

The festival may center on the harbor, but Greenport has long since earned its reputation as a destination well beyond the waterfront.

Begin the morning at Bruce & Son on Main Street, where the culinary ethos — thoughtful, local, quietly refined — announces itself in house-made pastries and dishes that reward attention. For something more spirited, Crazy Beans serves brunch and cocktails inside the historic Greenport Coronet Luncheonette on Front Street, a North Fork institution since the 1950s that wears its history with easy grace.

Come midday, Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market on Carpenter Street is the only logical destination — shuck-your-own oysters, a cold local beer, and the particular satisfaction of eating well without trying too hard. Claudio’s Waterfront, perched above the bay with views that have changed little since the restaurant opened in 1870, remains the standard-bearer for a proper lobster roll and a sense of place that few establishments anywhere can match.

As evening approaches, the mood shifts. The Frisky Oyster continues to draw a devoted following with its sleek interiors, low light, and a menu that takes coastal ingredients seriously without taking itself too seriously. American Beech, housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century building, offers an indoor-outdoor dining experience that feels both celebratory and intimate — the kind of meal that makes a weekend feel like it was worth the drive.

No visit to the North Fork would be complete without time among the vines. Kontokosta Winery, just a short hop from the village center, earns its devoted following with bluff-top views and a crisp Sauvignon Blanc perfectly suited to the salt air. One Woman Winery offers something quieter — an intimate countryside tasting that feels a world away from the weekend’s festivities. And a short drive west, Sparkling Pointe is in a category entirely its own, where Cynthia and Tom Rosicki have dedicated their estate to méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines grown and crafted entirely on the North Fork — a remarkable commitment that shows unmistakably in the glass.

Whether you come for the boats, the food, the wine, or simply the feeling of a community that knows how to mark a season, the Greenport Maritime Festival remains one of the East End’s most genuinely anticipated weekends.
