EAfter a complete update and restoration, the Rothman’s Department Store and adjoining property will be unveiled next Thursday, August 2 at 3 p.m. as the new Einstein Square in Southold. Honoring and preserving the store’s 100-year history while creating a central place for the community was important to co-owner Jonathan Tibett, who worked alongside co-owner Glenn Heidtmann, Jr., a fourth-generation contractor, to complete the project. Rothman’s Department Store and the 80th anniversary of the summer Albert Einstein spent in Southold when he and Mr. Rothman formed a legendary friendship. Einstein would later refer to this time as his “happiest summer ever.”
“Southold Historical Society is thrilled to see the historic site being preserved,” said Southold Historical Society Executive Director Deanna Witte-Walker in a press release. “We have been watching the progress with great satisfaction, knowing both this building and this special relationship between Albert Einstein and David Rothman will be celebrated for years to come.”
Scott Bennet of Douglas Elliman is representing the potential commercial and residential tenants and will be available for tours of the revitalized spaces.
