NORTH FORK MEDITERRANEAN
Hummus, baba ganoush, gyros and wraps, and more, casual Mediterranean food is the flavorful and comforting fare we want to dig into more often. On the North Fork, there are a few spots doing it right when you want a quick bite that’s more than just a sandwich or salad. Though, these a pretty good, too. Here are a few of our local picks…
Turkuaz Grill in Riverhead is a small joint right behind East Main Street on the riverfront. The eggplant salad with smoked eggplant, grilled red peppers, tomatoes, olive oil, and lemon-pomegranate sauce is a refreshing side dish, while the more substantial kofte kebab – lamb meatballs – with onion, parsley and seasonings char-grilled make a great main course. Greenport’s Olive Branch Café is tucked away across the street from Mitchell Park. Try the cold appetizer combo plate with stuffed grape leaves, baba ganoush, muhammara, eggplant Istanbul, tarator’s of beet, carrot, kale, and more. At the Hellenic Snack Bar in East Marion, no matter what you order, their homemade lemonade is a must. Also get a classic beef gyro on grilled pita bread with cold marinated tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki sauce wrapped in foil.
