The summer is winding to a close, and the mad rush of preparing to send the kids back to school is about to begin. But before we say goodbye to the lazy days at the beach, and the long nights out, there still is one place on the North Fork that beckons to us: Greenport.
Greenport, a place Forbes Magazine called one of the prettiest towns in the United States, is hosting various events throughout the end of August and the beginning of September. These events are a mix of fun, food, entertainment, and are even educational for kids and adults alike. So don’t worry just yet about packing lunches or the long commute to work – check out these events that’ll help you relax and have fun.
Don Fisher and George Summers
The Railroad and Greenport’s Economy
On Friday, August 19th Greenport’s Seaport Museum Arts & Culture Series continues at 7P.M. at the East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation (101 3rd Street Greenport, NY). Don Fisher and George Summers will be discussing the history of the railroad, and its importance on Greenport’s economy through the late 1800s to modern times. Since October of 2008 Don Fisher has served as President of the Railroad Museum of Long Island. George Summers, a local clergyman, enjoys working with the Railroad Museum of Long Island at its Greenport site as the docent. This event will be fascinating for the whole family, and a great way to learn more about Greenport’s unique history.
Monday Night Pig Roast
Head on down to First and South on August 22nd, August 29th, and September 5th between 6P.M. and 9P.M. for their Monday Night Pig Roast. Local and craft breweries, as well as local producers sponsor this lively event. Six Point Brewery will be there on August 22nd, Lagunitas will be there on August 29th, and Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. will be there on September 5th. Also on the agenda is a raw bar featuring locals clams, peel and eat shrimp, and Diamond Jim Oysters. This event is great for the whole family, or even as a night out for you and your friends.
Paul Drum Nautical Education Program
On Wednesday, August 24th the Children’s Nautical Education Program continues with the Paul Drum Nautical Education Program. According to greenportvillage.com, this series “aims to share the rich maritime resources of the North Fork and Peconic Bay with area children.” Between 10A.M. and 11A.M. head on down to the East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation (103 3rd Street Greenport, NY) to see marine reptiles and their land-based friends with Cornell Extension. Kids between 8 and 12 will love this while also learning about the animals that are all around us. Pre-registration is necessary, so contact [email protected] if you are interested.
Maritime Art Show
On Friday, August 26th don’t miss out seeing the Maritime Art Show between 7P.M. and 9P.M. at the Seaport Museum in Greenport, NY. According to artistsnorthfork.com, “We are also delighted to share our art with the North Fork community at large and hope that our respect for the beauty that surrounds us comes through in our paintings.” Looking at the beautiful art on their website, artistsnorthfork.com, people of all ages will appreciate and be in awe of their pieces. This event is a great way to teach kids about art, and show them the beautiful things the artists have created. It also is a great date night for you and your partner! No matter whom you go with, it’s a great and classy way to spend a Friday night.
Greenport Gallery Walk
On September 2nd between 6P.M. and 9P.M. head on down to Greenport Village for their Gallery Walk. You will start off at Hector deCordova Studio & Gallery, and then go to The Siren’s Song Gallery, Nova Constellatio Gallery, Gallery M, The South Street Gallery & Framers, and end at Greenport Harbor Brewing Co Gallery. These six different unique places will display all different types of art, and also give you an excuse to enjoy one of the summer’s last cool nights! You’ll love the art, the beautiful scenario that is Greenport, and have a blast walking around as the sun sets and the stars come out.
Even though we have to say goodbye to summer, these five events help make it a little bit easier. Between a classic pig roast, learning about art, animals, or history, and enjoying the beautiful village of Greenport itself, I am confident that the transition to autumn will be smooth.
